Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) Cases Rise
The Centennial Chapter of the American Red Cross reports a significant increase in the number of military families seeking assistance over last year.

As of October 31, 2005, the Chapter has served 1003 families, an increase of five percent over the same 10-month period last year. With Veteran’s Day this week, this is a good time to reflect on the needs of our families right here in northern Colorado whose loved ones are out there protecting our freedom. It is important to remember that our armed forces, at home and abroad, are doing the duty that we as a nation have asked them to do. Their families should not have to suffer additional hardships because of that service.

Providing emergency communications and access to financial assistance for military families is a cornerstone of the American Red Cross mission. The Red Cross is the only organization chartered by Congress to provide this service.

Williams attributed the rise in the requests for assistance to the increased number of rotations in foreign postings, particularly among Reservists and members of the National Guard. “I think we forget that when these men and women are called up, they usually leave a job that pays more than their service assignment. That’s a hardship for the family. In some cases, they are the only breadwinner.” In addition, citizen soldiers tend to be a few years older than the full time military, and so more likely to have family responsibilities of their own.

“We keep a cadre of staff and volunteers on call 24/7 to assist military families in need,” Williams explained. “Our job is to get the wheels in motion right away. Many requests are very time- sensitive, as in the case of an accident or serious illness within the family.” The goal is to submit the request within two hours, regardless of what time the call comes in. “We are deeply grateful for the commitment of our volunteers who do this work at all times of the day and night,” he added.

If financial assistance is needed, the Chapter documents the need and cuts a check for emergency aid right away. “Usually emergency financial assistance is requested when basic needs like electricity or rent are in jeopardy,” Williams said.

The American Red Cross relies on donations and grants, and is not a government agency. Donations support services and programs offered by the Red Cross including health and safety courses, disaster response and planning, youth services, and international and social services, including support for the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
