Monetary gifts to the Red Cross are the best way to assist victims of disaster. In the case of a single family devastated by disaster, financial support from the chapter in the form of vouchers to local businesses for food, clothing and shelter helps the family begin the recovery process. In this way, each family is given the resources and the freedom to select those supplies that are most important to their ability to return to work and school.

In the event of widespread disaster, financial contributions enable the Red Cross to purchase the most urgently needed items as close to the disaster site as possible. Purchasing near the disaster site ensures supplies get to victims as quickly as possible, without delays and hefty transportation costs. Because communities hit by disaster generally experience significant economic loss, buying goods locally also helps to stimulate the weakened economy by pumping money back into area businesses. Thus, the Red Cross can only accept large quantities of new goods readily available for shipment to the disaster area. Each gift will be evaluated based on the total cost of using it prior to acceptance.

In-kind gifts are donations of goods and services, usually from businesses, in lieu of cash. In-kind gifts are accepted on a limited basis after evaluation to determine if there is a need for the particular item or service. In-kind gifts for operations of the Chapter, like current computing technology or office supplies and furniture, reduce cash expenses and can be very helpful to our volunteers.
