Centennial Chapter
Responds to Katrina and Friends |
Katrina, Rita and Wilma devastated the Gulf
Coast, but Centennial Chapter was there to
help in this, the biggest natural disaster
the American Red Cross has ever responded to
on our shores.
- Before land fall, Centennial’s
Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) was
already in the area--ready to move in
when it was safe for the volunteers. The
ERV returned in late November with about
15,000 more miles on the odometer. It
spent those weeks feeding individuals in
several states.
- Centennial joined the massive
volunteer training effort, “Give Hope
Now,” on Labor Day. In the next three
weeks, it trained nearly 250 new
volunteers in several of the most the
essential skills of disaster response.
About 150 of those were able to be
deployed to the disaster area.
- School children, businesses,
foundations, and individuals amassed the
biggest fundraising effort in the
history of the chapter, raising more
than $2 million for hurricane relief.
